“Do to no one what you would not want done to you. Give your bread to those who are hungry, and your clothes to those who are naked. Ask advice of every wise person. Bless the Lord God in everything; beg him to guide your ways and bring your paths and purposes to their end”. (Tobit 4:15-16, 18-19)
This is the highest point in the advice Tobit gave his son Tobias when Tobit felt that he is coming to the end of his life on earth. The Bible tells us that Tobit was an honorable man who “walked in paths of truth and in good works all the days of his life”. (cf Tobit 1:3) The last advice he gave his son tells us much about his life style, but our reflection today is on the message itself, not his life style.
In the reading of today, through the advice of Tobit, we see the will of God for our lives. In it the full commandments of God is complete and also consummated in love. This is what God demands of us; that we should not do to others what we would not want anyone do to us. – it is the Golden Rule of life. Whether you believe in God or not, it is binding on us and in keeping the rule, we find meaning in life and ultimately in God.
Go through the ten commandments and see if they are not all summarized here. It is the basic law of nature.
If we place this in our various circumstance and positions, we see what God wants from us in our day-to-day living; whether you are a leader or a follower, a pastor or a faithful; whether you are a labourer or an employer, it is binding on all of us. It is the first and basic principle of living.
In addition to that, to whom more is given, much is expected. As a Christian, something more is expected of me: to “bless the Lord God in everything” because it is in Him that we live, move and have our being. Above all, we must not trust only on our abilities or intellects to succeed. No. You must “beg Him (in prayers) to guide your ways and bring your paths and purposes to their end”. That is the way we live according to the Will of God.
Have you done that today?
Perhaps, that is the missing link to your success. Do that today; everyday and walk yourself to Greatness!
