“Do not use harmful words in talking. Use only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed so that what you say will do good to those who hear you. And do not make God’s Holy Spirit sad; for the Spirit is God’s mark of ownership on you, a guarantee that the Day will come when God will set you free. Get rid of all bitterness, passion and anger. No more shouting or insults. No more hateful feelings of any sort. Instead, be kind and tender-hearted to one another, and forgive one another, as God has forgiven you in Christ.” (Ephesians 4:29-32)
What more can I say? The message is clear, direct and says it all.
Like St. Paul said, “imitate me as I imitate Christ” (I Corinthians 11:1), and we know that Christ is the Son of God, one with God (John 14:11), the Second Person of the Trinity. Therefore, we are called to be like God, who made us in His own image and likeness (Genesis 1:26).
Being like God means taking up all the attributes of God, which is consummated in these two supreme qualities/attribute of God: “Strength and Love”.
God’s strength is omnipotence; He “manifests in Power”; there is no limitation whatsoever as He created all things by Himself alone. God is Power Himself. Again, God is Love. Love that is personified in Christ, who emptied himself for us, which means the ultimate form of Love.
In our World today, love is seen as weakness and in all truth, it seems to be so, in the sense that love does what power cannot do. Love forgives but power punishes. Can you now see how both qualities seems to contradict each other? But in God they are both superlative. God is Love! God is Strength! He manifests in Power; He is Love personified and we are told to be like Him for His word says; ”you are gods, I said; all of you are children of the Most High”
So as children of the Most High, we are co-creators with God and that is why we are admonished this morning to only use “helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed (at every point in time), so that what you say will do good to those who hear you”. Word is power; word is action/force, so our words mean a lot. That is why we must be mindful of what we say at every point in time.
God, through His words created the World and after creation, He gave us the mandate to continue the work of creation (Genesis 1:28) and we must create in the likeness of God.
So with our words, we should imitate God who made us in His likeness. We should create with our words. We should, therefore, “not use harmful words in talking”. “We should not make God’s Holy Spirit (that dwells in us) sad”. “We should forgive one another, as God has forgiven us in Christ”. That is what it means to be God-Like; co-creators with God, and that is how we get the power to create wealth for it is our Divine Mandate.
Therefore, fall down in prayer and beg God for forgiveness in ways and times you have made His Holy Spirit sad, through the words you speak, thereby removing in you the power of creation. Ask him to renew His Spirit in you and make pledge to always live according to His Divine will, for that’s how to achieve the power for greater things.
