Tuesday, August 7, 2018: Do Even More!

“It is not as if you live in the dark, my brothers, for that day to overtake you like a thief. No, you are all sons of light and sons of the day: we do not belong to the night or to darkness”. (1 Thessalonians 5:4-5)

(Taken from the day’s Reading: Morning Prayer for Tuesday, Psalter Week 2; The Breviary (Ab.V. pp 486)

Today, our reading comes from St. Paul’s admonitions to the Christians at Thessalonica. The Church at Thessalonica had been seriously disturbed by the teaching of the second coming of Christ, so St. Paul teaches them what is expected of them as Christians who live in the hope of resurrection of the dead and eternal life.

When I wanted to read further, for the Holy Spirit to direct me and give me the message to live by today, I mistakenly read Chapter 4, instead of Chapter 5. When I realized my mistake, I stopped reading and wanted to go over to Chapter 5, which is the correct Chapter for the day; but a message came to me saying: “there is a reason a led you to where you are reading”. At once, I went back to where I stopped and there was the message! It says, “Do even more”!

Paul was writing to Christians who have been doing their best in living up to the teachings of Christ given to them by the disciples. In this message, he was giving them insights on “a life that pleases God”. He said, “Finally, our brothers and sisters, you learnt from us how you should live in order to please God. This is of course, how you have been living. And now we beg and urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to do even more”.

Most times, I pride myself in the knowledge that I am a Christian; I go to Church every Sunday, I pray every day; morning and night, I read my Bible and do as much as I can to avoid offending people or leading the young ones astray. But today, the message is a call to do even more. I therefore call on you to share this message with me in the knowledge that a day would come when we shall be required to give an account of our lives. And we must remember that our Lord Jesus Christ said, “To whom much is given, much is required” (Luke 12:48)

We have been given a New life in Christ testified by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we should live according to the dictates of the Holy Spirit.

The message says: “God wants you to be holy and completely free from sexual immorality”. “No man should do wrong to his fellow Christian or take advantage of him”. We know all these teachings and what are required of us but we also know the weaknesses that come from the human nature. It should not be excuses to us because God’s grace is sufficient for us.

Like Paul says, “It is not as if you live in the dark, my brothers, for that day to overtake you like a thief. No, you are all sons of light and sons of the day: we do not belong to the night or to darkness”. We do not lack the knowledge, but we are called to live according to God’s word. We need to do more and that more is found in this passage: “Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God – what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect”. (Romans 12:2)

Remember, to whom much is given, much is expected. I therefore call today to seek first the Kingdom of God and all its righteousness and guess what…!

He is “Elohay Mauzi!” – “The God of My Strength!”

Remain Blessed!
